McDonnell was awarded the Academy Award nomination for her performance as Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is also well-known for her portrayal of President Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica, the President's wife on Independence Day and for her prominent role in Donnie Darko as the titular persona's mother.
